On June 1-3, 2005 In Volgograd, on the basis of the Volgograd State University, the 18th EATUOU Congress was held. The meeting was attended by the representatives of 20 classical universities from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, Russia and Ukraine.
The choice of the venue of the congress was determined by two factors. In the year of the 60th anniversary of the Victory, the participants wanted to meet in a city that covered itself with unfading military glory. In addition, in May 2005, Volgograd State University celebrated its 25th anniversary of foundation.
Delegates and guests of the congress took part in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the VolSU and in the Action of Memory dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The participants of the congress laid a wreath on Mamayev Kurgan, visited the VolSU Museum, where they left a memorable entry in the guest book.
The participants of the congress also met with the acting Rector of VolSU, Professor B. Siplivy, with whom a meaningful conversation took place on the ways of educational reform and development of Volgograd State University.
President of the Eurasian Association of Trade Union Organizations of Universities, the Chairman of the Joint Trade Union of Moscow State University, I. Kotlobovsky made a report “The role and tasks of trade unions in the context of globalization. The socio-economic consequences of the modernization of higher education for university teams and the tasks of trade union organizations”. The delegates also discussed the issue of the work of trade unions in educating and shaping the outlook of the student as an individual and specialist.
According to the results of the congress, a resolution was adopted. The congress recommended that the trade union organizations, members of the association, expand the practice of concluding bilateral agreements that include both professional and social problems of the collectives.
At the Presidium of the association, by the decision of the congress, a commission on legal issues was formed. It was also decided to intensify the work of the EATUOU student section. To this end, in the framework of the annual conference held at Moscow State University, it was decided to ask to organize a section on social issues of students. In addition, in order to identify the motivation of membership in the trade union and the priority areas of work of trade union organizations, it was decided to develop a sociological questionnaire for conducting a survey in the EATUOU member teams.
The congress decided to apply to the Eurasian Association of Universities with a proposal to include in the program of the next conference “Universities and Society” a section on the problems of educational work in universities.
The XVIII Congress of the EATUOU also resolved a number of organizational issues. In particular, the trade union organizations of employees and students of Stavropol State University were accepted by the association and replacements were made as part of the EATUOU Presidium.
